Dear Hikers, Trail Users and Friends of the Mountain

We would like to advise all hikers and visitors that, with immediate effect, the hiking trail across the farm towards Simonsberg will be closed.

This decision has not been taken lightly. The trail has been enjoyed by members of the public for many years, and we greatly appreciate the responsible way in which so many hikers have used the route and enjoyed this beautiful part of the mountain.

However, the current conditions require us to take a more cautious approach. The Western Cape is experiencing very dry conditions, reduced winter rainfall, high temperatures and periods of strong and gusty winds, with the current weather patterns also contributing to increased wildfire risk.

These conditions create a heightened risk of mountain fires as well as dehydration and heat-related emergencies for hikers, particularly during the warmer and windy conditions currently being experienced.

For these reasons, we believe that closing the route is the responsible course of action, both for the safety of hikers and to help protect the mountain and surrounding areas from the risk of fire.

We would like to sincerely thank all the hikers, climbers and visitors who have enjoyed this route over the years. Thank you for appreciating the mountain, respecting the farm and helping us to look after this special environment.

We apologise for the inconvenience caused by the closure.

Thank you for your understanding, cooperation and continued respect for the Simonsberg and its surrounding environment.

Management, Tokara Wine & Olive Estate.
